Getting started with Scribe Administrator

Before Scribe Server can be started, it must be configured by setting up the database location, login accounts and SQL/error logging options. The following step-by-step example is based on McKoi database used as the backend for Scribe Server; other databases will differ in their default server port numbers, Database Administrator login accounts etc., but the general flow of actions should be the same.

1. General setup

Scribe stores report procedures, print templates and other components in the relational database tables. These tables are stored in a configuration schema created by Scribe, the schema can be located in any database from the supported databases list. The example that follows uses McKoi SQL database for hosting the configuration schema.

Click on Setup tab and select "McKoi SQL" from the DB adaptor pop-up list:

If McKoi database server runs on the same host as Scribe Server you can leave all settings in their original, default state. Otherwise change the server host and/or the port as required.

The detailed description of the setup parameters can be found here.

The following settings can be used for McKoi-based Scribe connection:
Option Description
Database server host If the database server runs on the host as Scribe Server you can set this value to localhost.
Database server port The default port of the Mckoi SQL Database server is '9157.
Database login account If you use an account other than SYSADM, McKoi database will ask you for the SYSADM password to authorize creation of the new account.

Set the parameters as per the table above. When entering a password, you will be asked to re-enter the password in a dialog to verify it.

Press Set button. You will be asked to enter McKoi's system administrator password in the dialog window:

If McKoi server was created via the scripts/batch files distributed with Scribe Server, the SYSADM password is "hello". Otherwise, get the valid SYSADM password from McKoi database administrator.

Enter DB login and password. You will be asked to re-enter the password in a dialog to verify it.

Enter Scribe Administrator user ID and password. This user ID will be your Scribe login account later, when you start Scribe Client and connect to the Server. Again, you will be asked to re-enter the password in a dialog to verify it.

3. Start the server

Click on Server tab and press Start button:

Wait until the Server starts and the message at the bottom of the window reads "Server is running". At this point, the Server is ready to accept connections from the Clients.

Scribe Server Administrator window can be closed; the Server will continue to run in the background as long as the host is powered on (Linux) or the user is not logged off (Windows).
